Tag/Day 1.1 auf der/on AZORES in Bremerhaven, Germany

ITB (Internationale Tourismus Börse Berlin) 2014 - Eine große Überraschung wartete dort auf mich. Dort erfahre ich, dass es eine Party-Nacht auf der AZORES gibt. Obwohl der Termin nicht passt: es wird sofort gebucht. Obwohl das Budget nicht passt: wird kurzerhand das Getränkepaket für Bruno auf der CELEBRITY MILLENNIUM storniert: muss er halt Eiswasser und Filterkaffee trinken.



ITB (International Tourism Exhibition Berlin) 2014 - A big surprise was waiting for me. I learned that there will be a party night on AZORES. Although the event did not fit to my aganda: I booked immediately. Although it did not fit to our budget: I will cancel Bruno's beverage package on CELEBRITY MILLENNIUM: so he had to drink ice water and filter coffee.

The appeal of the ship is the history of the ship. Built 1948 as STOCKHOLM - later 1956 hit and "sank" ANDREA DORIA in the Northern Atlantic. A very special story later as cruise ship of East Germany: VÖLKERFREUNDSCHAFT (Friendship between peoples) you can find in a book which tells the story.



Der Reiz dieses Schiff zu sehen liegt sicherlich an der Geschichte. Erbaut 1948 als STOCKHOLM - später 1956 die ANDREA DORIA im Nordatlantik "versenkt". Eine ganz besondere Geschichte, dann als DDR-Kreuzfahrtschiff VÖLKERFREUNDSCHAFT, die in dem Buch "Vom Urlauberschiff zum Luxusliner" von Gerd Peters beschrieben wird.

Fasziniert durch eine DVD, die ich von dem früheren britischen Veranstalter Travelscope bekommen habe. Seit 2007 versuche ich daher an Bord der ATHENA zu kommen und dann ging Travelscope in die Insolvenz. Für 2013 hatte ich schon die Party-Nacht von Kiel nach Hamburg gebucht. Endlich mal den Nord-Ostseekanal im Tageslicht und auch CIC als Schiffseigner ging dann in die Insolvenz, so dass Ambiente Kreuzfahrten ohne Schiff da stand.



I was fascinated by a DVD which I got from the former British tour operator Travelscope. Since 2007 I was trying to get on board of ATHENA and then Travelscope went bancrupt. For 2013 I booked already the party-night from Kiel to Hamburg. Finally passing the Kiel-Canal during daylight and then the ship owner CIC went bancrupt and so the German tour operator Ambiente Kreuzfahrten had no ship anymore.

Therefore: even it was quite heavy: I had the book with me to see around and to compare.



Deswegen: trotz des Gewichtes des Buches: ich hatte es mit, um man zu gucken und zu vergleichen.

Aber nach 1994 ist leider nichts mehr übrig geblieben von der alten STOCKHOLM. Und trotzdem ist es interessant hier Kreuzfahrthistorie live zu erleben.



But after 1994 there was nothing left of the ancient STOCKHOLM. And even though it is interesting to experience cruise history live on board.

Up North to Bremerhaven, Germany! 16.00 hrs the check-in should start and 15.56 hrs we were still at Bremen central station.



Auf nach Bremerhaven! 16.00 Uhr beginnt der Check-In und 15.56 Uhr sind wir noch in Bremen Hbf.

Wir lassen die S-Bahn passieren, sie wäre nur fünf Minuten früher in Bremerhaven, aber hat keine 1. Klasse und hält an jeder Milchkanne. Der Regionalexpress hält nur einmal unterwegs. Das war wirklich klasse.



We let the commuter train go as she would be only five minutes earlier in Bremerhaven but had no 1st class and would stop at every single station. The Regional Express would only stop once on their way. That was brilliant.

Then you had in shows like Crime Watch a bar to protect the eyes of a criminal to protect his identity by hiding the eyes... Today everybody has anyway a smart phone in front of the eyes so you do not need to edit the pictures anymore.



Früher brauchte man bei Aktenzeichen XY die Sünderbalken... Heute hat jeder eh ein Smartphone vor den Augen, so dass man die Bilder dahingehend nicht mehr bearbeiten muss.

Was sehr stark von Ambiente Kreuzfahrten war: wir wurden schon freundlich am Hauptbahnhof von Praktikantin Julia begrüßt, die dort mit einem Bus auf uns wartete. Seit den Doku-Serien "Verrückt nach Meer" mit der ALBATROS/ARTANIA und "Die Kreuzfahrt" mit der ASTOR ist mir erst bewusst, welche Rolle die Praktikanten spielen. Sie kopieren daher nicht nur irgendwelche Dokumente und gucken anderen von hinten bei der Arbeit zu, sondern erfüllen selbständige wichtige Funktionen.



Very nice of Ambiente Cruises: we were friendly welcomed by trainee Julia who was waiting there with a bus. Since the docu-soaps on German TV I learned which role trainees are playing on German ships. They were not there just to copy documents and observing others how they are working but having full important functions on the ships.

Here the bus for the cruise terminal starts. Normally you are paying 5.00 EUR for. The service is well described on the website of Columbus Cruise Center. I contacted Ambiente Cruises therefore: But I got only following message: I had to address to the local bus operator Bremerhaven Bus. They wrote back that Ambiente Cruises did not answered so far. I considered if we should not take a car rental out of Bremen and other might did not use their cars but train subject someone could confirm the availability of a complimentary transfer service. Altough you should know that Ambiente Cruises normally offers direct transfers to Bremen central station which would save one more transfer for their guests.



Hier fährt der Bus zum Kreuzfahrtterminal ab. Normalerweise zahlt man 5,00 EUR hierfür. Der Dienst wird hier auf der Homepage vom Columbus Cruise Center beschrieben. Ich hatte Ambiente Kreuzfahrten darauf angesprochen: Leider bekam man nur folgende Meldung zurück: Da müsste ich mich an Bremerhaven Bus wenden. Die schrieben wiederum zurück, dass sich Ambiente Kreuzfahrten sich zu dem Thema nicht geäußert hat. Ich hatte mir sogar überlegt, ob ich noch in Bremen einen Mietwagen nehmen sollte und andere, die mit dem Auto angereist sind, wären vielleicht auch mit der Bahn gekommen, wenn man gewusst hätte, dass ein kostenloser Transfer zur Verfügung steht. Wobei wohl Ambiente Kreuzfahrten wohl direkte Transfers nach Bremen Hbf anbietet, was manchem Gast einen zusätzlichen Transfer erspart.

Zum ersten Mal im Leben als Passagier... soweit man bei der Party-Nacht überhaupt einer ist... im Columbus Cruise Center.

I preferred to take the elevator. On the top you find the observation terrace which was not real ship-spotter friendly but now with the bag it was too difficult to walk up two more floors as the elevator does not go to the 4th floor.



Ich nehme lieber den Fahrstuhl. Oben befindet sich noch eine Aussichtsterrasse, die leider nicht besonders Ship-Spotter freundlich ist, aber im Moment ist mir der Koffer zu schwer um zwei Etagen noch hochzulaufen, weil der Fahrstuhl nicht bis zur 4. Etage fährt.

Und oben werden wir in den Wartebereich geführt.

And it did not look like Terminal 18 in Port Everglades, FL. They are handling there OASIS OF THE SEAS... Only one little counter... the advantage of a small ship.



Und das sieht ja gar nicht so aus, wie im Terminal 18 in Port Everglades. Dort wird die OASIS OF THE SEAS abgefertigt... Nur eine kleine Theke mit einem Schalter... aber das sind eben auch die Vorteile eines kleinen Schiffes.

Schön zu sehen, dass das Café auch auf hat, wenn das Schiff im Hafen bleibt.

Durch die Sicherheitskontrolle müssen wir leider auch durch.

Und eine "normale" Bordkarte. Muster Station A... Wir müssen doch nicht etwa zur Seenotrettungsübung? Wir fahren doch gar nicht raus.



And a "regular" ship's card. Muster Station A... Do we need to attend a life drill? But we do not sail out.

An "old fellow" expected us: Cruise Director Florian Herzfeld whom we saw last time active on DELPHIN VOYAGER...



Ein "alter Bekannter" erwartet uns: Kreuzfahrtdirektor Florian Herzfeld, den wir zuletzt auf der DELPHIN VOYAGER in Aktion gesehen haben... Damals noch mit Chris Roberts, Irene Sheer und Michael Holm...

Etwas, das wir immer seltener an Bord von Kreuzfahrtschiffen erleben: Die Begleitung zur Kabine. So ein Spalier hat doch ein besonderes Flair und man fühlt sich besonders willkommen.



Something you do not experience so frequently anymore on cruise ships: an escort to your cabin. Such a guard of honor gives you a special feeling and you felt very welcome.

Eine "ABsteige", weil es 4 Decks von Deck 5 ABwärts geht. Wir wären bereit gewesen zu Fuß zu laufen, aber unser Escort nicht... Und wer denkt, dass ich nicht zählen kann, hat Unrecht: Die Portugiesen können nicht zählen: die haben ein Deck 4A dazwischengezogen... Das kennt man ja eigentlich von der Zahl 13, dass sie oft durch 12A ersetzt wird, aber ich kenne keine Zahl, die durch 4A ersetzt werden kann, zumal es 5 noch gibt...



A descent by four decks from deck 5. We would walk ourselves but our escort did not like... And who thinks that I cannot count has not right: The Portuguese cannot count: They added Deck 4A... Normally you only know from 13 that you have 12A but there is no number which was replaced by 4A as we still have 5.

We got a cabin with ONE porthole...

Ungewöhnlich geräumig, wenn man mal an unsere erste Kabine auf der LILI MARLEEN denkt.

The glasses were made of plastic... so sad...



Die Becher sind aus Plastik... Schade eigentlich...

Zwar sind die Bordkarten keine Schlüsselkarten, aber dennoch gibt es eine eigenständige Schlüsselkarte.



The ship's card were no key cards but you had seperate key cards.



Soviele Wandhaken haben wir ja selbst auf manch modernen neuen Kreuzfahrtschiffen nicht gefunden...



On many new modern cruise ships you do not find so many hooks for your closes like here...

UNFORTUNATELY... the air-condition... and we did not have our full technical equipment box with all tapes and foils with us. That was angry. Somewhere here was also a main drain pipe: We could easily refinance our next cruise if we get only 10 Cent per visit of a toilet (but ourselves) during a one-week-long-cruise.



LEIDER... die Klimaanlage... und wir haben unsere Ausrüstungskiste mit den Klebebänder und Folien nicht mit. Sehr ärgerlich. Außerdem verläuft hier irgendwo ein Hauptabflussrohr: Würden wir für jeden Toilettengang, den wir nicht selbst hatten, nur 10 Cent während einer einwöchigen Reise kriegen: wir hätten locker unsere nächste Kreuzfahrt finanziert...

Schalter direkt am Bett und nicht nur eine Steckdose am Fernseher. Wer hatte allerdings 1948 ein iPhone, ein Blackberry, ein iPad, einen PC, eine eReader, ein WLAN-Router, eine Digitalkamera? Und selbst wenn ich 1994 zu Grunde lege: die Männer hatten vielleicht einen Rasierer... die Frauen einen Lockenstab... und gemeinsam eine elektrische Zahnbürste und das brauchte man ja nicht am Bett, sondern direkt im Bad.



Switch next to your bed and not only one power outlet at the TV-station. Who had 1948 an iPhone, a Blackberry, an iPad, a PC, an eReader, a WiFi-Router, a digital camera? Even thinking back of 1994: the men had their shavers... the women their curling iron... and maybe together an electric tooth brush and that all you need in the bathroom and not next to your bed.

Sogar ein Board, damit man sinnvoll die Schuhe unterbekommt. Viel Liebe zu Detail. So etwas liebe ich ja.



Even one board that you can stow your shoes under. A lot of passion for details. I love such items.



Bruno hat entdeckt, dass man die Holzverbindungen drehen kann und freut sich daran...



Bruno discovered that you could turn around every single wooden bar and was simply happy...

Later we found out that we had luck and our cabin had TWO portholes.



Später stellen wir fest, dass wir sogar das Glück hatten, dass unsere Kabine ZWEI Bullaugen hat.

Der Vorhang des rechten Auges war allerdings zugezogen, um eines der zahlreichen Variationen von Edvard Munchs "Der Schrei" zu verbergen... Irgendwie erinnert mich das daran und ich freue mich, dass ich nicht extra nach Oslo fahren muss, um das zu sehen, sondern dieses Gemälde direkt an meinem Bett ist...



The curtain of the right porthole was closed that way to hide one of the many many variations of Edvard Munch's "The Scream"...  Somehow it reminded me to those and I was looking forward that there was not any need to go to Oslo to see it as the painting was just right above my bed...

We had some problems to adjust the air-condition accordingly although it looked simple. But it was not working like it was originally supposed to do: you can have it "hot" or "cold" and the reaction time was about 20 minutes. But they should have few more days to fix the problem without being disturbed.



Mit der Klimaanlage tun wir uns etwas schwer, obwohl es eigentlich logisch aussieht. Nur sie macht leider nicht das, was da drauf steht: es geht nur "heiß" oder "kalt" und die Reaktionszeit beträgt 20 Minuten. Aber sie haben jetzt ein paar Tage Zeit, um das Problem mal in Ruhe zu lösen.

Das ist übrigens unser Kabinensteward Ernesto aus Kuba, der uns versprochen hat, während wir Abend essen waren, das zu beobachten und dann ggfls. den Bordingenieur zu holen. Schade... er war leider vorher nicht auf der LOUIS CRISTAL unterwegs und kann mir sagen, wie so die Kuba-Kreuzfahrten sind.



By this way that was our cabin steward Ernesto from Cuba who promised to check it again while were at the dinner and if necessary to call a board-engineer. So sad... he was not before on LOUIS CRISTAL and could not tell me how the Cuba-cruises are going on.

Mit Schokolade sogar, die ja viele Gesellschaften abgeschafft haben.



Even with some chocolate which were withdrawn by many companies.

Unfortunately my night was very short. Few day ago I watched too many episodes of Criminal Minds and I was still processing internally what I saw. The contents of the episodes mixed with events of my life and I had two nights already night mares. So I hoped that I would have a good sleep on that mattress because it was exactly how I like it. It was new and hard. I had an intoxication of Coke. This and my subconcious took care that I did not pull out the charger off the wall while I was sleeping and so I would pull out my camera and my iPhone off the rack. So I never came to a deep sleep. But the rack was very good to stow glasses, tissues etc. so the risk was very limited. Next time I would carry a multiple power outlet and I might have a better feeling. No sheeps were around to count... only a high number of toilet flushings you could count... So some ear plugs might be very helpful if you are noise sensitive. It might be only good to know to have them with you. You can still decide on board if you want to use them. It might be very angry not be prepared and you have to chance to get some in the night... By the way: for the fact that we did not sail I was surprised how much vibration and noices of the engines you would notice.



Leider war meine Nacht sehr kurz. Ich hatte vor wenigen Tagen ein paar Folgen von Criminal Minds gesehen, die mich noch innerlich beschäftigten. Die Handlungen der Folgen vermischte sich mit Ereignissen in meinem Leben und so hatte ich zwei Tagen Albträume. So hatte ich gehofft, dass ich auf dieser Matratze gut schlafen konnte, weil sie meinem Geschmack entsprach. Sie war neu und hart und ich mag das. Mein Cola-Rausch und mein Unterbewusstsein, dass darauf aufgepasst habe, dass ich im Schlaf nicht das Ladegerät aus der Wand reiße und dabei mein iPhone und meine Kamera herunterreiße ließen mich nicht richtig in den Tiefschlaf. Wobei die Ablage neben dem Bett ist echt gut, für Brillen, Taschenbücher usw., so dass hier hätte wenig passieren können. Ich würde mir vermutlich einen 3-Fach-Stecker mitbringen und so hätte ich ein besseres Gefühl. Schafe waren ja leider nicht da, die ich zählen konnte... sondern nur die Anzahl der Toilettenspülungen, die durchrauschte... Deswegen würden ein paar Ohrstöpsel nicht schaden, wenn man etwas lärmempfindlicher ist. Man muss es ja nur wissen, damit man sie mithat. An Bord kann man ja immer noch entscheiden, ob man sie einsetzt. Ärgerlich wäre es bloß, wenn nicht vorbereitet ist und nachts keine bekommt... Übrigens: dafür, dass wir ja gar nicht gefahren sind, fand ich doch, dass man durchaus die Vibrationen und Geräusche des Antriebs wahrnehmen konnte.

Im Badezimmer werde ich sprachlos:



In the bathroom I became speechless:

A bath tub incl. whirlpool function. But only for dwarfs!!! Not from the length but for Bruno it was difficult to take take shower: He could shower his neck by leaning forward to fit under the shower head or he need to lean back or he had to take shower cowering/kneeing etc.



Eine Badewanne mit Whirlpool-Funktion. Allerdings ist sie nur für Zwerge!!! Nicht von der Länge her, sondern zum Duschen für Bruno ungeeignet: entweder er duscht seinen Nacken und beugt seinen Kopf möglichst weit vor, um unter dem Duschkopf zu passen oder er muss seinen Kopf so weit zurückbeugen oder er duscht hockend/kniend usw.

Ich falle rückwärts um, als ich ein Bidet entdecke. Das Ding stammt ja wohl aus der Goldenen Ära, als Kreuzfahrten echter Luxus waren...



I was shocked when I discovered the bidet. That was from the golden era of cruising when it was true luxury...

Great the closet for storage of many small items. Only the hair dryer was "scrap"... You should have a hair dryer like with a hair dresser.



Klasse: der Schrank für die Aufbahrung, der vielen Kleinigkeiten. Nur der Fön ist leider "Schrott"... Da sollte ein Fön ran, wie vom Friseur.

Zwei Stück Seife (eines für das Bidet und eines für das Handwaschbecken - hier fehlt jedoch eine Seifenschale), Duschgel/Schampoo-Kombi - der Rest ist für uns nicht von Interesse. Schöner wäre jedoch ein Spender am Bad.



Two pieces of soap (one for the bidet and for the wash basin - here you missed a little bowl for the soap), combined shower gel/shampoo - all other items were less interesting for me. Nicer would a dispenser at the bath tub.

Ein Rasierspiegel.

Etwas "nervig", da extrem laut: Die Abluft läuft leider im Dauerbetrieb und schaltet sich leider nicht automatisch ein, wenn das Licht eingeschaltet wird und wieder aus nach einer bestimmten Zeit, nach dem das Licht ausgeschaltet wurde.



Somehow very annoying as it was extremely loud: The absorption ran all the time and was not connected to the switch of the lights like you knew from others: automatically turn on someone switch the light on and after the light was switched off the operation terminates a certain time after that event.

That was our Oceanview Suite on GRAND PRINCESS: Jacuzzi function yes, marble yes, but no bidet...

On QUEEN ELIZABETH we had a handicapped suite (Princess Grill). But here again no bidet. Why should not handicapped guests have also a use of a bidet?



Auf der QUEEN ELIZABETH waren wir in einer Behinderten-Suite (Princess Grill). Aber auch hier kein Bidet. Warum sollten Behinderte keines brauchen?

Und auf der NORWEGIAN BREAKAWAY: da fehlte der Blubber im Bad und die Länge und ich mit 1,72 m war schon zu lang für das Bad... Also alle Achtung: wir haben zu Hause ein Bidet und ich mag es und so bin ich sehr überrascht, dass man so etwas noch auf einem Kreuzfahrtschiff findet!!! Wow!!!



And on NORWEGIAN BREAKAWAY: you had any bubbles in the bath tub and the lenght. Me of a lenght of 5' 8" was already too long for that bath tub... So I had to say: we have at home a bidet and I love it and so I was very much surprised to find such an item on a cruise ship!!! Wow!!!

They had two programmes for us.



Für uns liegen zwei Programme aus.

Zunächst verschaffen wir uns einen Überblick. Ich hätte doch meine Sekretärin mitnehmen sollen... Wann sollen wir uns eigentlich hier entspannen und erholen? Das sieht nach Stress aus. Hätte ich ja auch im Büro bleiben können... Keine ruhige Minute.



First we tried to get an overview. I should have my secretary with me... When should we relax and recover here? Looked a like a lot of stress. So I better should stay in my office... No single calm minute.

Great... At 09.30 hrs and 10.00 hrs the next day they had two busses towards central station. So we could easily plan the day.



Aha... Um 09.30 Uhr und 10.30 Uhr fahren morgen zwei Busse wieder zum Hauptbahnhof. So können wir schon mal den Morgen gut planen.

Auf der Rückseite werden wieder alle Senior-Offiziere von der Reedereiseite und alle Funktionäre von der Veranstalterseite vorgestellt.



On the back page they introduced all Senior-Officers of the shipping company and all persons with functions of the tour operator's side.

There was one more information folder. But I was not willing to check it anymore... I was only interested for the "Please do not disturb"-sign... Test was passed successfully on AZORES. Nobody called that we placed the sign and asked if they were allowed to disburb us.



Und noch eine weitere Informationsmappe liegt hier aus. Aber damit befasse ich mich nicht mehr... Mich interessiert nur das "Bitte nicht stören"-Schild... Den Test hat die AZORES bestanden: Niemand ruft uns an, dass wir das Schild hängen haben und sie das festgestellt und nachfragen wollten, ob sie nun doch stören dürften...
